Voltalis and Powervault launch an energy flexibility solution that could bring zero electricity bills to eligible households

  • The Partnership delivers an automated grid flexibility solution that unlocks new revenue streams for homeowners while keeping existing suppliers, enhancing grid resilience, and driving the UK’s clean energy transition
  • The pilot sees 300 residential households’ battery storage connected to Voltalis’ demand side response technology

Voltalis, the European leader in demand side response, and Powervault, the UK’s leading home battery storage specialist, have entered a strategic partnership to launch the UK’s first consumer-led energy flexibility solution for domestic storage. The partnership enables consumers to participate directly in both the Capacity Market and Wholesale Markets, now accessible under the P415 grid code. By integrating Voltalis’ smart demand response technology with Powervault’s SMARTSTOR platform, households can now turn their solar batteries into revenue-generating assets—on top of tariff optimisation—and independent to their electricity supplier.

This innovative collaboration comes at a crucial time. Within the ambition of NESO and DESNEZ’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, 23-27 GW of battery storage will be needed by 2030. As much as 10-15 GW will need to come from distributed behind-the-meter assets, a dramatic increase from the current rate of installation. This highlights the vital role households will play in strengthening the UK’s energy resilience.

The partnership is currently being piloted across approximately 300 residential units, turning household battery storage into a revenue generating asset while supporting grid stability and the UK’s Net Zero goals. The pilot programme builds on the three decades of market-leading innovation between the two businesses, which has delivered over 1.5m successful domestic installations combined.

The cloud-to-cloud integration between Voltalis’ Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and Powervault’s SMARTSTOR platform is fully automated with real-time control, making it simple for homeowners to access sophisticated flexibility markets previously only available to large commercial operators. This system connects thousands of homes together as if they were one giant virtual power plant, helping to balance the grid in real time.

What makes this technology so effective is that it is supplier-independent and works with any compatible battery system. Through intelligent and automated control of energy during peak consumption periods, Voltalis’ technology reduces strain on the national grid and creates income for customers. This creates a net financial saving in addition to the savings generated by SMARTSTOR’s automatic optimisation. Combined, this could mean zero electricity costs* for a typical UK household with a solar installation and a Powervault battery.

As the UK energy system becomes increasingly renewable dependent, consumer-led flexibility solutions will be crucial to address the intermittency of renewable energy products and manage grid stability, while empowering households to take control of their energy costs.

This partnership marks another step in Voltalis’ broader plan to develop up to 5 GWp of demand response capacity in the UK market by 2030, representing a £1 billion investment plan. This initiative also highlights the growing role of energy flexibility technologies in helping the UK meet its decarbonisation targets while maintaining a secure and resilient electricity supply.

Dr. Randall Bowen, UK Managing Director of Voltalis, commented, “We’re excited that this partnership makes consumer-led flexibility accessible to UK households in a way that’s completely automated and works with their existing setup. Homeowners can now participate in energy markets that help balance the grid while earning additional returns from their battery investment. It’s a win-win that supports both household budgets and the UK’s energy transition.”

Robin Stopford, CEO of Powervault, said, “Through our groundbreaking partnership with Voltalis, Powervault customers can now enjoy transparent savings from consumer-led flexibility. They already minimise grid electricity costs with SMARTSTOR intelligent scheduling, and now thanks to Voltalis technology they can also automatically unlock additional savings that were previously only available from an electricity supplier.”

*For a medium-usage household (3600kWh/y) with a 5kWp photovoltaic (PV) and 15kWh battery system for a TOU (time-of-use) rate import & low-rate export SEG tariff with export MPAN (and half-hourly settled meter) compared to no PV on a TOU import tariff This results in total savings of £857 p.a., of which £714 come directly from savings on their electricity bill (£51 p.a. with PV and batteries installed instead of £765 p.a. without PV and batteries installed). In addition, a medium-usage household could earn an additional £142 p.a. by offering services to the grid.
